LoRa / LoRaWAN Antenna Calculator

LoRaWAN's operating frequency is region-specific, not a single global band — this tool treats region as part of the LoRa profile itself. The 5 named regions on file: EU868 (868 MHz), US915 (915 MHz), AU915 (915 MHz), AS923 (923 MHz), IN865 (865 MHz).

Opening the tool from this page prefills the first named region, EU868 at 868 MHz, as a reasonable global starting point — change the frequency field for any other region.

What it does

Recommended topology order for LoRa: PCB Monopole (λ/4), Inverted-F (IFA), PCB Dipole (λ/2), Helical/Coil. Unlike the 2.4 GHz applications above, LoRa's recommendation leads with a plain PCB monopole rather than an inverted-F, and reaches all the way to a helical wire option for the smallest sub-GHz form factors.

How the model works

The CTA carries `?application=lora`, prefilling 868 MHz (EU868) and, where reachable, the top-ranked topology. Supported regions for this profile: EU868, US915, AU915, AS923, IN865, custom — 'custom' covers any typed-in frequency outside the five named bands. LoRa transceivers already carry their own catalog impedance per chip preset, so this profile does not shadow that with a second, profile-level default the way the 2.4 GHz applications above do.

Limitations

The lead-ranked IFA option carries a reference-anchored feed estimate, not a measurement of your layout: Feed impedance ≈50 Ω is a reference-anchored starting estimate for the drawn feed-tap position (TI DN0007 class layout, measured < −15 dB at 2.4 GHz), not a guarantee — analytical geometry alone cannot set the tap impedance. Include matching pads; verify and tune the tap on first-article hardware with a VNA. General finite-ground feed behavior for the monopole/IFA/dipole options: Finite-ground detuning of the feed impedance: not calculated by this analytical model (feed model assumes a counterpoise ≥ λ0/4). The helical option's resonance is set by turns/diameter/pitch, not by wound-wire length: Electrical length: not calculated by this analytical model (a normal-mode helix resonates by turns/diameter/pitch self-inductance and self-capacitance, not by wound-wire length — requires measurement or EM simulation). This profile makes no LoRaWAN duty-cycle, power-limit, or certification claim for any region — the named bands are frequency-naming only.

Frequently asked questions

Which LoRaWAN regions does this calculator cover?

EU868 (868 MHz), US915 (915 MHz), AU915 (915 MHz), AS923 (923 MHz), IN865 (865 MHz), plus a 'custom' entry for any other typed-in frequency.

What frequency prefills when I open the tool from this page?

868 MHz (EU868) — the first named region; edit the frequency field for any other.

Which antenna topology is recommended first for LoRa?

PCB Monopole (λ/4), unlike the IFA/MIFA-led ordering the 2.4 GHz applications use.

Does this page make any regulatory or duty-cycle claim?

No — the named regional bands are a frequency-naming table only, not a certification or duty-cycle/power-limit statement for any region.
